I originally trained as a painter and then had a career as a chartered architect for many years. I taught at Edinburgh College of Art and Edinburgh Napier University on various fine art, design and architecture courses for over a decade and have won awards in both architecture and painting.
I am a lines enthusiast. My work often incorporates the use of tartan paper or graph paper, as the grid patterns enhance the visual complexity and reflect my architectural background. Industry and engineering are also of great interest and diagrams and maths engineering symbols are often included in my paintings.
More recently my work has focused on atmospheres in the landscape with emphasis on mark making of the acoustics which also contribute to memories of an experienced landscape, it’s soundtrack. I like to create an experience for the viewer, not a ‘picture’ and to take risks, which are exciting and interesting to me as a painter. The mark making suggests things which the viewer can interpret in their own way, it’s about feelings as well as observations, and these can change as we go through life. I paint in layers and like to create a landscape where you can see something different each time you look into it. They are spontaneous experimental pieces, reflecting my response to a landscape in a visually poetic way.
This website shows a selection only. I always have new work in progress and can be contacted via this website. See contacts page for where I am exhibiting throughout the year or above for where I am this month.
Private commissions are always welcome and everything is priced sensibly, no pressure. About half my workload is now commissions which have built up over the years. You are always welcome to call or email for a chat about something you’re thinking about and I’d always be pleased to hear from you.
